Thought to have been built around 600AD and abandoned in 750AD, the monastery was rediscovered during excavations in 1992.

The island is accessible by boat off the Jebel Dhanna jetty about a 250km drive west of Abu Dhabi or 370km drive southwest of Dubai. 

You can also take a seaplane to the island and enjoy captivating views on the way, which takes about forty-five minutes.
